Many changes in the last half century have affected marriage and divorce rates.The rise of the women’s liberation movement, the advent of the sexual revolution, and an increase in women’s labor force participation altered perceptions of gender roles within marriage during the last 50 years.And of those that do last, marital bliss is not always a prominent feature.Why do so many marriages dissolve, and can spouses do anything to ensure that things work out?Using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979 (NLSY79), this article examines marriages and divorces of young baby boomers born during the 1957–1964 period.The article presents data on marriages and divorces by age, gender, race, and Hispanic origin, as well as by educational attainment.Wolfinger controlled for a variety of demographic variables and still found evidence that in today’s world, marrying before your mid-20s or after your mid-30s is associated with higher rates of divorce.
Statistical trends do suggest that it's best to wait a few years: Divorce is 50% less likely for someone who is 25 years old when they wed, as compared to someone who gets married at age 20. If in your 40’s, it seems OK to me to date guys in their 30’s, 40’s or 50’s. Guys in their 30’s are definitely out, guys in the 40’s might work, but they might want women in their 30’s or 40’s, guys in their 50’s definitely want girls in their 30’s or 40’s, and guys in their 60’s are just too old. Being new at this, I’m going to go for just being my Gosh darn self and if someone wants to date me, great, and if they think I’m too old, then so be it. It’s all about believing you have a lot to offer someone, which I do.
