Adults with Spina Bifida experience unique issues – some are associated solely with Spina Bifida and others are a result of the aging process.
Females with spina bifida are affected less often than males.
Understand that their parents are not going to be around forever so it is important they begin this transition period as soon as possible.
They will need to learn how to take care of their own personal health needs and well as what it will be like to have the responsibility of having a job.
The terms Spina Bifida and meningomyelocele are usually used interchangeably.
Spina Bifida can be surgically closed after birth, but this does not restore normal function to the affected part of the spinal cord and an individual with this condition will have dysfunction of the spinal cord and associated nerves from the point of the open defect and below.
