As many as one in 10 Germans still take a nude holiday once a year.A car next to one of the tents in the camping site photo looks like a Volkswagen Beetle – a very common car in Germany when Mrs Merkel was growing up.Beside I doubt any of them would allow a male to enter without female company, their way of keeping out voyeurs. My desire to parade au natural really wasn't a sexual thing it's just that for our whole lives we seem to undress, get in the shower, then get out, dress and out we go.If I sleep in pajamas I feel like I'm being strangles all over my body.Well I got to the point where I couldn't stand it anymore and made every effort to be a naked as I could when I could.
Heading for less-than-tropical New England to take it all off in front of dozens of total strangers is another.
Pannack describes one young man who seemed born for the lifestyle: “He would stroll around nude in any temperature, even snow; it was like he didn't feel the elements.” Meanwhile, another man she photographed joined a naturist club as way to reclaim pride in his body, after years of feeling self-conscious.
"[Joining] raised his self-esteem and changed his perspective on his body," Pannack says.
The photographs are thought to have first appeared in the Swedish nudist magazine Helios in the 50s or 60s.
If you believe the nudist lifestyle belongs to a bygone era, say, the Summer of Love, photographer Laura Pannack has news for you. Pannack admits it came as a surprise when she first heard about the Young British Naturists (YBN), a collective of naturists under 30 who would eventually become the subjects of her photography project by the same name.
