The song seemed like such lyrical departure for you, to the point that I was almost startled by how frank you are singing about love.
Is that what you're going to go toward your whole life? I want to ask you about "The Shade," the first single from the album. It was like sitting on the edge of a cliff with your friends, sharing a joint and looking out at the sunset and then just having them, like, puke. “The more the industry is flailing around trying to monetize everything,” he says,” the rest of us, who are actually enjoying our lives, are there to play music for each other.” Their previous three albums had been released by record companies, but singer Emily Haines grew disillusioned with that kind of relationship: “Most record companies have some whole concept that they’re going to market and then find the singer to do it, that’s the thing that comes last, the artist.” It was clear to her and the rest of the band that to find the creative energy for a new album, they would have to find a way of putting the music and the artists first.
